Chappell Roan claims she would be «much more successful» if she «wore a muzzle,» saying it would have made her «way bigger.»
Chappell Roan is unapologetic about speaking her truth, even when it costs her in the public eye. In a recent interview published on January 19, the 26-year-old singer shared that she would be “much bigger” if she silenced her instincts and held back more.
“I think I’d be more successful if I wore a muzzle,” Roan quipped. “If I ignored my heart telling me ‘stop, stop, you’re not okay,’ I would be bigger. I would still be on tour right now.”
Despite her success, Roan has faced criticism for her outspoken nature, being labeled a “spoiled diva” and accused of having “tantrums.”
Roan revealed that her career hasn’t been without its challenges, including harassment and the invasion of her privacy, with people allegedly stalking her parents’ home.
She also recalled a viral moment in September, when she stood up to a photographer disrespecting stars on the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet.
“I’ve been responding that way to disrespect my whole life,” Roan explained, acknowledging the difference between her actions now and the expectations placed on pop stars.
“Now, there are cameras on me, and I happen to be a pop star, and those things don’t match.”
Roan, who is nominated for six Grammy Awards, including best new artist and album of the year, believes her refusal to conform has impacted her career.
Despite this, she remains committed to her values, emphasizing the importance of making choices that align with her instincts. “If I don’t feel like doing something, there are always options,” she said. “I don’t operate out of scarcity.”
Roan’s approach to her career reflects the influence of her late grandfather’s wisdom: “There are always options.”
She shared that even when offered lucrative opportunities, she doesn’t feel pressured to take them if they don’t feel right.
Though Roan is grateful for her Grammy nominations, she has been candid about her view of the award show.
In a previous appearance on *Carpool Karaoke Christmas*, she referred to the Grammys as a “talent show for the popular kids,” though she acknowledged the honor of being nominated.
When asked about a potential win, she humorously teased that she might say something controversial.
