Keke Palmer Confesses She ‘Hated’ Her Parents for Years Due to ‘Overwhelming Pressure’

Keke Palmer has faced ups and downs in her relationship with her parents. As the second of Sharon and Larry Palmer’s four children, Keke, now 31, experienced intense pressure after landing her breakout role in *Akeelah and the Bee* in 2006.

Her fame skyrocketed with the 2008 show *True Jackson, VP* on Nickelodeon, turning her into a child star and the main financial provider for her family.

In an interview with *The Cut*, Keke shared the overwhelming pressure she felt to succeed for her family and community, which led to feelings of resentment. «I hated my parents for a long time,» she confessed.

Even though her family didn’t explicitly voice their expectations, Keke felt the weight of being the one they relied on.

She also opened up about the impact of a former manager, who traumatized her by suggesting her mother would die if she didn’t lose weight. «It got me thinking about medical bills and things like that. It was just too much,» Keke said.

Keke’s challenges at home influenced her portrayal of True Jackson, a young teen managing a fashion brand in the Nickelodeon series.

«She was climbing the corporate ladder, working a grown-up job as a kid. I felt the same way,» Keke explained, sharing how her character resonated with her own life.

Reflecting on her time as a teen star, Keke acknowledged the pressures she faced, including a relationship she had at 15 with a 20-year-old. «It was a stressful, difficult, depressive time,» she revealed.

While she admits to feeling conflicted, she now recognizes the power imbalance in the relationship, something she couldn’t fully process at the time.

In her book *Master of Me*, Keke reflected on how the relationship harmed her, noting that she didn’t have the maturity to understand it fully at the time.

It wasn’t until later in life that she experienced genuine love and respect, realizing her past relationship was wrong.
