Meghan Markle responds to Mindy Kaling referring to her as ‘Markle’ on her Netflix show, saying, «I’m a Sussex now, you know.»

In an episode of *With Love*, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, teams up with her friend Mindy Kaling to plan a kids’ garden party filled with fun activities.

The two have been in touch through emails ever since Kaling appeared on Meghan’s Archetypes podcast in 2022.

During their discussion on the Archetypes episode, the two bonded over their shared experience of being latchkey kids.

Meghan revisited this theme in her Netflix series, recalling, “I was a latchkey kid,” explaining how she grew up eating fast food and TV dinners, with meals like microwavable kids’ meals.

«I grew up with that and watching Jeopardy,» she shared, adding that Taco Bell and Jack in the Box were frequent choices.

Kaling, amused, said, “People wouldn’t believe that Meghan Markle ate at Jack in the Box.»

Meghan responded with a smile, “It’s so funny that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.»

She went on to reflect on the significance of her family name, saying, «You have kids, and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children.’

I didn’t realize how meaningful that would be, but it means so much to say, this is our family name, our little family name.»

In a candid interview Meghan elaborated on the importance of the Sussex name, saying, “I love that this is something that Archie, Lili, H, and I all share.

It’s so meaningful to me.” She described the Sussex name as part of their “love story,” noting that as their children get older, they’ll be eager to learn about how she and Harry met.

For now, she said, “a huge part of our love story is that we share the name Sussex.”

When Meghan and Harry wed in May 2018, Queen Elizabeth granted them the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Their children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, use the Sussex surname, in line with royal family tradition.

Harry was known as «Harry Wales» during his school years, taking his father King Charles’ former title, Prince of Wales, as his surname.

Initially, Archie and Lilibet were known as «Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor» and «Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor,» but after King Charles ascended to the throne in September 2022, they were granted the titles of prince and princess.

Meghan and Harry officially began using these titles in March 2023, when they announced Lili’s christening, and the royal family’s website updated their titles to «Prince Archie of Sussex» and «Princess Lilibet of Sussex.»
