Kate Hudson Shares Her Thoughts on Taylor Swift’s Almost Famous-Inspired Penny Lane Coat and Its Potential ‘Easter Eggs’
When Taylor Swift made her appearance during Super Bowl weekend, she quickly brought one thing to the forefront: the return of the Penny Lane coat.
On February 8, the “Cruel Summer” singer, 35, donned a stylish shearling coat that many movie buffs recognized as a nod to Almost Famous, the 2000 rom-com in which Kate Hudson played Penny Lane, a ‘70s band groupie.

The coat became iconic, cementing Penny Lane as an unofficial muse for the fashion style.
On February 25, Hudson, 45, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where she expressed her excitement over Swift’s homage to the film, which earned Hudson her first Golden Globe in 2001.
“It’s so exciting! She wore the Penny Lane coat,” Hudson exclaimed, also teasing that Swift’s outfit may have included even more Easter eggs than what meets the eye.

Hudson and Fallon explored some possible clues related to Swift’s lucky number, 13. For one, Almost Famous* debuted on September 13, 2000, while The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” was released in the U.S. on February 13, 1967.
“It’s getting a little freaky,” Hudson joked.
While nothing is confirmed, it wouldn’t be surprising if Swift chose the look to bring some extra good luck to the event.

Still, it’s likely that she simply loves the iconic coat, which has also been sported by celebrities like Bella Hadid and Sydney Sweeney.
Prior to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Swift wore a red version of the coat to the Chiefs vs. Texans game at Arrowhead Stadium on December 21, adding a bohemian flair to her usually preppy game-day style.
Originally popular in the 1970s, the Penny Lane coat made a comeback in the early 2000s thanks to Hudson’s portrayal of the character, with the piece designed by costume designer Betsy Heimann.

“Betsy created looks for Almost Famous that perfectly captured the era,” Hudson told Vogue in 2015.
“She had worked with Neil Young and spent a lot of time in the rock world, so the looks were very authentic to her experiences.
It’s no wonder they’ve had such staying power. Penny Lane’s signature coat, designed by Betsy, is even in a museum now.
That’s how much it resonated with people. I feel really lucky to have been part of that film.”
