‘Maria’ Trailer: Angelina Jolie Breаks Down and Lets It All Out as Opera Singer Maria Callas
Netflix will release Pablo Larraín’s most recent biopic on December 11 after it opens in select cinemas on November 27.

In this emotive new teaser for Maria, Angelina Jolie plays the iconic role of Maria Callas.
On Thursday, October 24, Netflix released the latest teaser, which depicts Jolie’s transition into Callas.
The 49-year-old Oscar winner plays the late opera singer in the most recent biography directed by Pablo Larraín.

Notably, Larraín’s two prior films—Kristin Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer (2021) and Natalie Portman as former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie (2016)—centered on giants of the 20th century.
Larraín’s most recent work «follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye,» so the blurb goes.
After the singer, Maria accompanies her «in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.»

Due to her well-known three-octave vocal range, the soprano became a global celebrity. She passed away at the age of 53 from a heart attack in Paris in 1977.
Jolie earlier said that she was anxious about singing in the part at a press conference at the Venice Film Festival. (In August, the movie made its global premiere at the Venice Film Festival.)
Jolie stated during the August film festival, «I spent nearly seven months training; I was terribly nervous.» «I recall being really anxious when I sang for the first time.

I was trembling, so my boys helped to barricade the entrance so that no one else could enter.»
«And [Larraín], in his decency, started me in a small room and ended me in La Scala,» she continued. He therefore allowed me time to mature. To live up to [Callas] scared me
She also gushed over Larraín during the Telluride Film Festival screening in Colorado on September 2. «I was confident that Pablo would accept it and find a way to make it work as long as I gave it my all.

I was aware that I had to try my hardest to assist solve the riddle, but I also understood that he was a good man and that his support was helpful.
Despite the «seven months of opera classes, great teachers, and Italian classes,» Jolie, whose voice is mixed with actual recordings of Callas’ singing in the film, also admitted that she was «so nervous.»
Kodi Smit-McPhee, Pierfrancesco Favino, Valeria Golino, and Alba Rohrwacher are also featured in Maria.

The script for Maria was written by Spencer screenwriter and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight before the Hollywood WGA strike in 2023, which allowed the production to start shortly after the strike ended in September.
Maria will be available on Netflix on December 11 and in select cinemas on November 27.
