Wicked first reactions call film a ‘musical masterpiece,’ praise Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande
Reviews for the eagerly awaited movie rendition of Broadway’s Wicked, which stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, are starting to surface.
On November 22, the epic fantasy movie will be released in theaters. It is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, which was later made into a Broadway musical that won three Tony Awards in 2003.
With a staggering $145 million budget, Jon M. Chu is the director of Wicked, which is divided into two full-length movies, the last of which is scheduled for release in November 2025.
As viewers are introduced to the wonderful realm of Oz, critics are immediately referring to Wicked: Part One as a «masterpiece» that «pops and enchants on the big screen.»
Grande and Erivo, who play the witches Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, are the film’s main stars and are getting a lot of acclaim for their amazing singing and on-screen chemistry.
It was boldly dubbed the «very best big screen adaptations of a Broadway musical ever» by film and television journalist Scott Menzel.
One of the greatest big-screen adaptations of a Broadway musical ever is «Wicked,» a spectacular film.
Menzel tweeted on Wednesday, «Jon M. Chu adds some of his own special flourishes to the source material while perfectly capturing the magic of the Broadway show.»
As Elphaba and Glinda, Arianna Grande and Cynthia Erivo are just amazing.
Another outstanding performance in the movie is that of Jonathan Bailey. Wicked frequently exceeds expectations and lives up to the hype.
Fans of the Broadway musical ‘are going to completely lose their minds over’ one scene, Menzel further said.
Menzel said, «Wicked is without a doubt one of the best movies of the year.»
Wicked is «much more than we could have ever expected,» according to Variety’s Jazz Tangcay, who also claimed that director Chu, Erivo, and Grande «gifted us a musical masterpiece.»
«Ariana & Cynthia will blow you away,» Tangcay went on. The clothes and production design are a sight to behold.
Variety’s Katcy Stephen, a film critic, acknowledged that they were «pessimistic» at first but were pleased to say that Wicked is «a masterpiece.»
Stephen wrote that «Ariana Grande makes Glinda sparkle: she milks every moment with gusto, humor, and hair flips.»
I can see why the narrative needed two parts since Jon M. Chu gave it so much fresh life! The 20-year wait was well worth it.
Wicked is ‘the finest musical-to-movie translation’ since Renee Zellweger’s Chicago (2002) and Meryl Streep’s Mamma Mia (2008), according to Erin Stecker of IndieWire.
In the almost three-hour piece, Stecker also declared that Grande «is perfection.»
Journalist Simon Thompson said on Wednesday that the «#WickedMovie is an Oz-some spectacle that pops and enchants on the big screen.»
