Unsurprisingly, Sam Smith, 30, stole the stage during their «Unholy» duet with Kim Petras on February 5 at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards! When Sam arrived, they began to perform while being surrounded by disciples who were dressed in cloaks.
A flame-lit stage added to the intensity of the performance. Sam wore sheer ruffled shirt, latex leggings, and a top hat with horns. Kim dazzled and belted out the duo’s big hit while enclosed in a cage. Notably, Sam was presented to the audience by pop icon Madonna, who spoke about «dangerous» and «provocative» performers.
Many of Sam and Kim’s supporters posted their thoughts on social media shortly after they mounted the stage. The nonbinary singer/songwriter earlier that night donned a monochromatic red gown with a top hat, lace eye mask, bejeweled cane, and latex gloves while strutting down the red carpet.
Along with sporting a really spectacular dress, Sam arrived on the red carpet with the help of drag performers Violet Chachki, Gottmik, and vocalist Kim Petras. With a short red party dress, a red veil, a statement necklace, and red heels, Kim came close to matching Sam’s ensemble.
Sam and the «Coconuts» singer performed «Unholy» on Saturday Night Live in January, which set the bar high for their Grammys performance. The song, which is notably one of Sam’s tracks off their most recent album, GLORIA, was shouted out by the duo during their appearance on Saturday Night Live.
Sam and Kim were nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in addition to performing the song. Other nominees for that prize included ABBA («Don’t Shut Me Down»), Camila Cabello and Ed Sheeran («Bam Bam»), Coldplay + BTS («My Universe»), and Post Malone and Doja Cat («I Like You (A Happier Song)»).
On January 27, they released GLORIA, their fourth studio album, just over a week before Sam walked the stage at the Grammy Awards. Sam also received two awards, for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album, respectively, for the album In the Lonely Hour. Additionally, they were nominated for Album of the Year for In the Lonely Hour and Best Pop Solo Performance for the song «Stay with Me» (Darkchild Version).
