As usual, Lopez and Affleck’s kids come first in the divorce proceedings
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s five kids remain “a top priority,” a source says, following the news of Lopez filing for divorce.
Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE on Tuesday, Aug. 20, that the “Jenny From the Block” singer, 55, filed for divorce from the Batman actor, 52. TMZ first reported the news.
Lopez’s move comes more than two years after the couple legally married in July 2022, and on the two-year anniversary of their Georgia wedding, although the separation date listed in the filing was April 26. Their on-and-off romance dates back to 2003.
The two have spent plenty of time with their blended families in recent months. Affleck and ex-wife Jennifer Garner share Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, while Lopez shares 16-year-old twins Max and Emme with ex-husband Marc Anthony.
“The kids are a top priority, as they always have been,” an insider tells PEOPLE.
Lopez, adds the source, “tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken.”
The Hustlers star has spent time with Affleck’s children as recently as Sunday, Aug. 11, when she visited the Good Will Hunting Oscar winner’s rental home in Brentwood and brought Samuel to the mall.
On Affleck’s 52nd birthday on Thursday, Aug. 15, he received visits from both Lopez and Garner at the rental home.
In June, Affleck and Lopez both attended Samuel’s graduation ceremony and graduation party. Earlier that month, they both cheered him on at a basketball game.
In July, Lopez was spotted walking arm-in-arm with Violet in the Hamptons. A source told PEOPLE at the time that the two «really enjoy each other’s company” and “seem so happy to be spending this time together.”
The 18-year-old was also seen on Aug. 9 wearing what looked to be the same pink-and-white Dolce & Gabbana dress that her stepmother once wore for a date night with her father.
In May, Lopez joined Affleck, Garner and their blended families at Violet’s high school graduation. This summer, according to another source, Lopez wanted “to spend quality time with Ben’s kids before school resumes and Violet is off to college.”
