Cher reveals in her memoir that she discovered Sonny Bono’s affair with his secretary after enduring her third miscarriage

In her new memoir Cher: The Memoir, Part One, Cher reflects on a challenging time in her marriage to Sonny Bono

The 78-year-old singer shares that around 1967, when both her and Bono’s careers were struggling amidst a shifting music scene, she suffered her third miscarriage.

Cher reveals that during this difficult period, she discovered that Bono had allegedly been unfaithful with his secretary, which deepened her emotional pain.

At just 21 years old, the «Believe» singer felt devastated and feared she might never have children, while Bono focused on writing their upcoming film, Chastity. In her memoir, Cher describes how Sonny Bono hired a young, blond secretary to help with the Chastity script.

One night, Cher noticed suspicious figures in the house, and later saw Sonny helping the secretary out the front door. «It was such a f——g cliché,» Cher writes, feeling heartbroken but noting his effort.

After the incident, Cher packed her bags and went to her mother’s house, where her mom revealed she’d heard similar rumors about Bono for a while.

In her memoir, Cher shares that after Sonny Bono’s betrayal, she was heartbroken, and her mother never forgave him, especially when he blamed her for the affair. Bono tried to make amends, claiming she wasn’t sexually available enough, which Cher found absurd but still ended up apologizing.

Cher and Bono had son Chaz in 1969 and legally married that year. They separated in 1972 and divorced in 1974. Bono passed away in 1998. Cher later had son Elijah Blue Allman with ex-husband Gregg Allman in 1976. Cher: The Memoir, Part One is available for purchase.
