Gwen Stefani reflects on the «chaos» of the early days of her relationship with Blake Shelton and remembers a moment when she told him, «This is not happening.»

Gwen Stefani is reminiscing about her romance with Blake Shelton.

The 55-year-old pop star and the 48-year-old country music icon began their relationship in 2015 while working as coaches on The Voice.

Both were navigating the aftermath of their divorces—Stefani from Gavin Rossdale and Shelton from Miranda Lambert.

At that time, Stefani, who has three sons—Kingston, 18, Zuma, 16, and Apollo, 10—from her marriage to Rossdale—was hesitant to jump into another relationship, even though she had developed feelings for Shelton.

“We had just met, and everything was in chaos,” Stefani recalls. “Our lives were a mess, completely turned upside down.

Nothing seemed to be able to fix it.” She continues, «I even thought, ‘I can’t deal with this. It’s too much. I have enough problems already.

Blake Shelton was determined to win Gwen Stefani back — and he used the power of music to do it.

«I think he wanted to blow me away,» Stefani recalls. «He doesn’t write songs as often as he used to, but for me, songwriting is everything. It’s my passion, my purpose, and where I find meaning in life. Creating music is what fulfills me.»

Shelton poured his energy into crafting what would later become «Go Ahead and Break My Heart,» a heartfelt country duet the couple debuted in 2016, blending their talents and solidifying their unique connection through song.

«He sent me the song while it was still unfinished,» Gwen Stefani shares. «It was half-written, and he said, ‘Help me complete this.’ So, over text, I wrote the second verse and sent it back to him. That became the first song we ever created together. We weren’t even in the same room — it was like writing a musical letter to each other.»

Now, Stefani and Shelton are more than musical collaborators; they’re life partners. The duo tied the knot in 2021, blending their love for each other with their shared passion for music.

Over the last nine years, the couple has collaborated on numerous tracks, including «Purple Irises,» a standout on Stefani’s latest album, Bouquet, which is available now.

Their creative partnership continues to flourish, blending their distinct styles into something truly unique.
