Kelly Ripa shares a heartfelt update on her ailing 17-year-old dog, Chewie, after an «extraordinary» night, revealing she hasn’t been herself lately
Chewie, Kelly Ripa’s elderly dog, had a memorable night, and it was a welcome surprise for the TV host.
On the January 29 episode of *Live with Kelly and Mark*, Ripa shared an update about her 17-year-old dog, who has been facing health challenges recently.
While Ripa has been open about Chewie’s declining health on the show, she was thrilled to report that on Tuesday, the dog showed signs of her usual energy.
«Last night, she did something remarkable that she hasn’t done in weeks,» Ripa explained. «It might not seem like much, but if you’re a pet owner, you know how big it is.»
Ripa elaborated, «She managed to lift herself to clean, which might sound small, but trust me, it’s huge — she hasn’t done that in weeks.
Afterward, she curled up next to me and started doing her usual thing, gradually nudging me off the bed throughout the night until I ended up half-falling off. But I didn’t mind at all because it felt like the old Chewie was back.»
Her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, added that he appreciates every little moment with Chewie, including the routine things like bathroom breaks, understanding that such moments are precious and fleeting.
Ripa has shared in the past how Chewie has been acting differently lately, becoming more lethargic and disoriented.
So, seeing any positive shift in her behavior, like self-cleaning and regaining some energy, brought Ripa immense joy.
She first discussed Chewie’s health challenges earlier in March 2024, revealing that the dog had a tough day, walking into a wall and falling over.
«It’s one of those things you go through when your dog gets old,» Ripa said with emotion. «It’s tough, really tough, because she can’t tell you what’s going on.»
On January 14, Ripa expressed her sorrow and frustration over the impending loss of her dog, revealing her emotional struggle with not being able to communicate with Chewie about her needs.
«From one old girl to another, tell me what to do,» Ripa said, feeling the weight of the situation.
