«Struggling» Jim Carrey attends the Sonic 3 premiere, joking he took the role for the money

Jim Carrey looked sharp at the Los Angeles premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Monday.

The 62-year-old Ace Ventura: Pet Detective star wore a stylish black coat over a black-and-white shirt and dress pants.

Flashing a wide smile on the red carpet, Carrey followed up his recent comment that he took the role because he «needed money.»

Jim Carrey’s raven hair was neatly styled, swept to the side with a bit of gel. On the red carpet, he mingled with co-star Keanu Reeves and later posed with Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic.

Carrey, who portrays the villain Ivo Robotnik/Doctor Eggman in all three Sonic films, recently backtracked on his earlier comments about money, telling Comicbook.com it’s «not really about the money» and joking about gambling away his fortune.

«Flea circuses are my thing,» he humorously added. Jim Carrey also clarified his previous comments about retiring, after saying in 2022 he was «seriously» considering it.

«You can’t be definite about these things,» he explained, adding that he was talking about «power-resting» rather than full retirement. He said new opportunities can change things.

Though it’s unclear how much he earned for his latest role, Carrey once commanded $20 million for films like The Cable Guy in 1996. Despite a career filled with hits like Liar Liar and The Truman Show, his star faded in the late 2000s.

Carrey, once worth $300 million, returned to acting partly because, as he joked, «I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money.» However, he emphasized that the role also had heart, which drew him back.

Jim Carrey couldn’t resist adding his signature humor, saying he hopes the film «will bring families together and cure several diseases.»

However, finances seem to be on his mind, as his Los Angeles mansion remains on the market. Originally listed for $28.9 million in February 2023, the price has since been reduced to $19 million after multiple cuts.

Carrey, who bought the property for $3.8 million in 1994, is seeking changes in his life, having described the home as a «sanctuary» but no longer spending much time there.

Despite the price reductions, he stands to make a significant profit.
