‘Wasn’t Love at First Sight’: Cher Opens Up About Meeting Sonny Bono

After eleven years of marriage, the couple had a kid together.

«I mean, everybody vanished,» he said, alluding to the famous West Side Story duo.

The world seemed to halt, but Cher acknowledged, «He didn’t like me.»

«Love wasn’t immediately apparent. «Something,» she remarked. «I never felt it before.»

According to their tale, Cher, who was sixteen at the time, accepted Bono’s offer to work as his cleaner, and the two eventually fell in love.

«He liked my girlfriend,» according to Cher. «He said, ‘You know, you can come and stay with me,’ when I had to move in with him.

I said, «Okay,» and he said, «No, no.» You don’t seem very beautiful to me. I was therefore simultaneously thrilled and upset.

Cher said that the singer was «kind of childish» which allowed him to be «real» with her when Mason questioned whether their 11-year age difference was a problem.

«Because I had no expectations.» I had no desire for money. You know, I didn’t consider anything.»

The vocalist of the song «Believe» claimed that the women who were courting Bono at the time «wanted him to be grown up.»

They «got a candle and we just watercolored all day long,» Cher recounted. We [were] attempting to do it correctly. And those women probably didn’t want to do it.

In 1964, the year of their marriage, the pair went on to become the duo Sonny & Cher.

Chaz was born in 1969, and the couple was divorced in 1975. Cher stated that Bono «pissed me off royally and hurt me» in an interview conducted in 2023.

Before he passed away in 1998, Bono made an effort to be helpful. «I want to apologize, Cher,» he said one day as he entered my home’s kitchen.

The singer remembered, «I realized that I was wrong and that I hurt you in so many ways.» «That was really helpful to me.»

This Sunday, November 17, at 9 a.m. ET, CBS Sunday Morning will broadcast the whole Cher interview.
